Emergency Preparation

Being prepared for emergencies is crucial at home, school, work and in your community. Disaster can strike quickly and without warning. It can force you to evacuate your neighborhood, workplace or school or can confine you to your home.

What would you do if basic services – water, gas, electricity or telephones – were cut off? Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster, but they cannot reach everyone right away.

The best way to make you and your family safer is to be prepared before disaster strikes. We encourage you to: Get a Kit, Make a Plan and Be Informed.

The first video shows what we should do if a major disaster like an Earthquake struck our area. We hope to achieve this level of preparedness as a community.

The second video shows what a family should have and do as a minimum level of emergency preparation. We want to help all families in our community to be prepared at this level.

Toolkit for Pandemic Preparedness - Submitted by Lyle

People will HAVE to care for themselves at home in isolation. The government has no plans to handle the massive situation. The scenario of the pandemic includes inoperable infrastructure services such as power (with all that implies), food supplies, medical supplies, human services etc.such as in the 1918 pandemic of Avian Flu which killed millions of people and destroyed the functioning of the infrastructure entities, requiring years to recover.

I recommend that ANYONE who wants to have this information for use WHEN the Pandemic occurs (the Doctor indicates it is NOT a matter of IF, but WHEN--- possibly within the next 3 years) print this Toolkit.

POSSIBLE PANDEMIC PREPAREDNESS WEB PAGE Preparing for a Pandemic Many people are concerned about what they can and should do to prepare for the most recent potential medical emergency threatening the world today.

The Avian Flu. Though the time line of this threat to our safety is not known we can and should prepare for it. These preparations consist of being informed of what it is and what you need to do. There are several sites that can be accessed to help you to know what is happening.

The main web site is: http://www.pandemicflu.gov/ BYU-Idaho is prepared by stockpiling a few materials that we normally did not consider for other emergency situations, i.e. N95 masks.

We encourage all students, faculty, staff and visitors to this site, to prepare by putting together a 72 or 96 hour kit that can be accessed in the event of any emergency. A student kit need only be the bare essentials and can cost less than $20.

A list of what you should have as a minimum can be found here. OSHA: Health Care Workers OSHA has recently released it's guidance for the Health care workers in the event that a pandemic does occur. The complete document can be accessed at

Recently the Center for Disease Controll issued a statement on this subject. It can be viewed at: http://www.cdc.gov/Features/MasksRespirators . Documents Dr. Dane Dickson, MD, put together a packet of materials to aid in our understanding and preparation. It is titled "Preparing for an Influenza Pandemic". It can be accessed here.

District Seven Health Department out of Idaho Falls, Idaho, has put together an informative pamphlet on the subject. It can be accessed here. BYU-Idaho Communicable Disease Policy Communicable Disease Policy Communicable diseases may be a potential health problem for the university community. As with any community, students studying and functioning in close proximity to one another are susceptible to communicable diseases.

This Policy is implemented for communicable diseases commonly found in the college population and which can be transmitted by air, object, or through casual contact.

20 Things I wouldn't want to be without! (submitted by Charlane)

1. Car Kit - warm clothing (very warm - maybe foam clothing), rain coat and pants - waterproof boots, 4-ply plastic, 12 x 12 waterproof hat - water (1 or 2 gallons)-small water purifier - survival candy - survival bread - toilet paper - shovel - good pocket knife, granola, dried fruit.

2. Water purifier : Look for one that will clean hundreds if not thousands of gallons of water. I like the "Aqua Rain". It can be found on the Internet.

3. First Aide Kit - Sterilized wraps, scissors, water, blanket, Band - Aids, cayenne Pepper, allergy medicine, aspirin, re-hydration kit, stretchable wrap.

4. Survival Bread - this last forever, keep in car, keep in 72 hour kits.

5. Yerba Mate: A survival herb found in Spanish Stores (and at Stan Mar Health Food store).

6. Pulse: A variety of seeds, grains, legumes that will easily sprout.

7. Salt : (not store bought) Real salt with 72 minerals. An absolutely necessity for survival

8. Sanitation Kit: You will still need to use the bathroom even if there is no toilet. This is a must to prepare in advance.

9. Wash Kit: - How will you wash your clothes?

10. Dehydrated food: Learn to dehydrate your own food. Dehydrate items hard so they will last a long time.

11. Honey: - This is medicinal, if it is raw.

12. What - the real wheat Kamut or Spelt. Remember when Brigham Young said there will be no comparison to the value of a bushel of what over a bushel of gold. Most what today has been altered and changed.

13. Wonder Box - Cooking with little heat. It's a slow cooker with no electricity.

14. 8 hours of heat in a can.

15. Personal protection: Pepper spray and a whistle. A must for all woman.

16. Toiletries: tooth brush, paste, empty bottle to replace toilet paper and re-useable toilet paper, vinegar, baking soda, colloidal silver, hydrogen peroxide. Re-useable sanitary napkins.

19. Shelter (water proof tent) or 4-ply plastic
